Oxmarket Contemporary is proud to present Piers Ottey: Five Decades of Painting, the first exhibition to span the length of his nearly 50 years of painting. The exhibition, presented across all the rooms of Oxmarket Contemporary will explore how five central themes have remained consistent throughout his career. Landscapes, cityscapes, life-painting, portraits and the Masters are all represented. Every painting in the exhibition is available to purchase both from Oxmarket Contemporary in person or online now.
Much of Piers’ painting derives from visiting places at home and abroad. He has worked on images from the mountains of Switzerland to city paintings of San Francisco as well as London (where he was born and raised) and West Sussex where he has lived since 1980. Whatever the subject, his work continues to be concerned with colour as well as the relationship between natural space and flat surface geometry. Each painting has a short text written by the artist. It is his hope that a little insight into his thinking will further inform the viewing of his work.
Piers only paints what really matters to him; his children, his beloved dog Audrey, his motorbikes and his regular life-models are amongst these. His most critical eye is saved for his self-portraits which punctuate the decades. Of equal importance to him is the act of painting and the formal aspects which go with it. The mystery of putting colour down on a flat surface to ‘represent’ a view of often great depth without creating a copy of what he sees is central to his unique vision.
The exhibition presents the work of a brilliant painter across five decades, extraordinary achievement of consistency, evolution and focus on the subjects that mean the most to him.
